Association between usage intensity of short video platforms and altered brain function
The big picture
Short video apps (TikTok, and its Chinese version Douyin) are wildly popular, and people worry they might be bad for your mind. This study asked a narrower, physical question: do people who watch a lot of short videos have measurably different brains — even when they're just lying still, not watching anything?
The hypothesis
Their bet going in: heavy short-video use leaves a lasting "fingerprint" on how the brain is wired and how active it is at baseline. Not just a momentary effect while you're scrolling, but something that shows up even at rest. If true, it would suggest the habit changes the brain's default setup, not just its behavior in the moment.
The claim
By the end, they claim that people who use these apps more (1 hour+ a day) show three things compared to lighter users: their brain regions are "talking" to each other more than usual across almost the whole brain, a couple of specific spots have altered local activity (especially in movement-related areas), and the brain's overall wiring is shifted toward a more tightly-knit, efficient configuration.
The test (what they actually did)
They took 55 healthy young adults (ages 18–25, in China), asked each one how many hours a day they spend on short-video apps, and split them into two groups: light users (under 1 hour, 20 people) and heavy users (1 hour or more, 35 people).
Then they put everyone in an fMRI scanner — a machine that tracks brain activity by measuring blood flow — and just had them lie there awake, doing nothing. That "doing nothing" part is the point: it's called resting-state scanning, and it's meant to capture the brain's natural idle state.
From the scans they measured three levels of things: activity in tiny individual spots, how strongly different brain regions rise-and-fall in sync with each other (a stand-in for "communication," called functional connectivity), and the overall shape/efficiency of the brain's wiring treated as a network.
Crucially, they also checked both groups for depression and anxiety, and the two groups scored the same — so any brain differences aren't just "heavy users are more depressed."
The results (what they found)
Local activity: Two small spots differed. A movement/sensory area (left precentral gyrus) was more active in heavy users; a spot in the right frontal lobe was less active. Everything else was quiet.
Communication between regions: This was the big one. Heavy users showed widespread increased connectivity — lots of brain regions were more in sync than in light users, touching nearly every major brain network. The most solid increases were in sensory/movement, hearing, deep-brain, and attention-control networks.
Overall wiring: Heavy users' brains were organized in a more efficient, more tightly-clustered way — information could, in principle, travel across the network more easily and with shorter hops.
The insights (what it might mean)
Here's the honest, interesting part — the authors themselves offer two opposite readings and can't decide between them:
The worrying read: some of these patterns resemble what's seen in disorders like depression or schizophrenia, so maybe heavy use nudges the brain toward a vulnerable configuration.
The flattering read: "more efficient" wiring has also been linked in other research to higher intelligence and better working memory. So the same finding could mean heavy users' brains are just adapting to fast-paced content by getting better at processing it.
They genuinely don't know which, because they never tested anyone's actual thinking, memory, or attention. Same brain finding, two completely different stories.
The "proof" — how solid is this, really?
This is where you should keep your skepticism switched on. The evidence is preliminary and correlational, not proof of anything. Specifically:
- It's a snapshot, not a movie. They looked at everyone once. So they cannot tell you whether the apps changed people's brains, or whether people whose brains were already wired this way are the ones drawn to more scrolling. The arrow could point either direction.
- It's small — 55 people — which makes findings shakier and easy to over-read.
- The usage data is self-reported. People are famously bad at estimating their own screen time, and the dividing line was just 1 hour a day. This is "somewhat more vs. somewhat less" within a totally normal range — not "addicts vs. healthy." The authors are careful to say this is not about addiction.
- They didn't measure whether any of it matters for real-life thinking, mood, or behavior. The brain differences didn't line up with mental-health scores either (one weak exception).
- They also couldn't rule out mundane confounds like caffeine, time of day, or how recently someone had used their phone.
Bottom line
People who watch more short videos show some differences in resting brain activity and wiring. That's a real, if modest, finding worth following up. But this study cannot say the apps caused it, cannot say whether it's good or bad, and cannot say it affects your actual life. It's a flag planted for future, bigger, longer studies to investigate — not a verdict. Anyone citing this as "TikTok rewires your brain" is running way past what the data actually shows.
